The Standard Introduction
Several words come to mind when I consider the purpose of this web page and compare it to my normal, every day existence. I am something of an armchair historian as well as an antiquarian, and most of my time is consumed by study. More often than not, I can be found engrossed in some old volume or shambling about various libraries, engrossed in various pursuits. Although my thoughts are rarely focused on this world, actually going or traveling somewhere seems like something I rarely get to do, but here I am with a homepage that records my travels to several interesting places. Antithesis, paradox, and oxymoron are several terms that come to my mind. Perhaps irony is the most relevant.
I have always been interested in history to the point that, as a younger man, I assumed I would one day become a history teacher. When most of my peers were playing football and examining the mysteries of internal combustion engines, I was a bookworm absorbed in the notes of such men as Austen Layard, Howard Carter, and Heinrich Schlieman (just to name a few). While I wouldn't go so far as to claim "Indiana Jones" as a hero, I was far more interested in travel and exploration than I was "normal teenage stuff." Yes, it has occurred to me that I must have been a big nerd - but I don't care.
Although nowadays I do have a career which involves the constant teaching/exposition of history, the history teacher career never materialized. I guess that can be expected when you're 30 years old before you earn your first bachelor's degree, but there's no changing the past. That aside, I still enjoy the study of history, I am an armchair historian, and occasionally I get off my rocker to travel to a few out of the way places that catch my eye. No, I've never been to Nineveh or Troy: I concentrate on not too distant historic sites. Anyway, Nineveh is in Iraq and it's quite dangerous, thank you; although yes I probably would go if I had the chance.
What else is there to know about me? Obviously, I like to visit historical places. I'm also involved in urbex (all legal, naturally). I'm also an amateur storm spotter. Yes, usually my favorite place is the middle of the storm, though the volunteer work is drier than you might imagine. Other than that, I'm involved in a continuous struggle to finish a Th.M. and tentatively kicking around the idea of pursuing a Th.D. later on - but of course that's another story altogether, so I'll leave it at that. Okay, that's more than enough of an introduction - you now have a good overview of my interests. Thanks for visiting my page.
