A Few Ghostly Delights: Tidbits Of Terror From Northeast Texas And Southeast Oklahoma!
A Red River Valley Hay Field

The quiet landscape has inspired more than one spooky tale.
My family is from Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma. My father was a first generation Texan. His father, my grandfather, was born in Alabama and moved to Texas when he was a young boy or maybe even an infant. From this side of the family I inherited Cherokee and Irish blood. According to family members more knowledgeable than I, my first European ancestor in America was a blacksmith from Ireland.
My mother was born in Redmond, Oregon, but did not live there long. From her side of the family we inherited Choctaw blood so that I and my children are actually registered as "American Indians" through the U.S. Bureau of the Interior, Department of Indian Affairs. We all have government identification cards called a "CDIB," which means "Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood." Formerly, all Indians were registered with the War Department and issued documents that allowed the government to keep track of their movements and location. Some of mother's family lives in Northeast Texas. Others among her people are still in Oklahoma, which since the 1800's has been the "homeland" to which the Choctaw tribe was exiled from what is now the state of Mississippi. The folks traveled to Oklahoma in a series of moves usually collectively referred to as the "Trail of Tears," on account of the hard traveling conditions and many deaths. It seems to have actually been a forced march. But, enough about my genealogy.
I lived my childhood and several years of my adult life in the Red River County area. The county seat, Clarksville, is only about fifteen miles south of the Texas-Oklahoma border, so I basically grew up in two areas. From these two areas, Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma, I heard more than one eerie story that ran chills up and down my spine - when I was much younger, of course. I now present these tales "to the best of memory." I must say that the composition of this particular section was most enjoyable. It gave me the opportunity to set down, once and for all, some memories I've had for many years.
Naturally, I cannot vouch for the truth or accuracy of anything I have written other than to say that the following tales were presented to me as true stories. Sometimes I have omitted names that might still be recognized, but otherwise everything is given just as I remember it. I call these Tidbits of Terror. Enjoy.
