Tombs of the Blind Dead Review

Chapter 8: Quest For Immortality

Tombs of the Blind Dead

Chapter 8 finds us at a library where Roger and Betty meet one Professor Cantal, who has fallen asleep over a large tome. At first uncooperative, he brightens up when Roger mentions that Virginia was murdered at Berzano. Insensitively, he exclaims, "Berzano? The templars are back? That's great!"

Betty is quite sure that the old scholar is "mad," and says so. Professor Cantal then begins to tell them of the templars' quest for immortality. It turns out that the knights were once lords and masters of the area. A flashback occurs where the knights are seen patrolling Berzano and bringing a victim - a young woman - onto the grounds. Professor Cantal provides commentary throughout the flashback, loosely quoting church records of the templars' trial. He notes that they came back from the holy land bearing the cross of the Egyptian pharaoh's and held satanic rituals in a quest for immortality. At the same time they oppressed locals and acquired vast territory, becoming hated and feared.

The scene changes to show the wicked knights tying their young victim to an x-shaped restraint. Then a sacrifice occurs where mounted templars slash the young woman until her blood flows. Then the creepy knights surround the victim to drink her blood. Professor Cantal goes on to explain that the knights stood trial for their deeds and were "hung up" in a public display. Their bodies were left hanging and the crows pecked out their eyes.

After a short exchange about such things as blood pacts, Faust, and science not having all the answers, the inspector arrives, accusing the Professor of telling fairy tales. He asks Cantal about his son, Pedro. It turns out that ol' Pedro Cantal is the leader of a gang of smugglers, and their headquarters is "about six miles from Berzano." The inspector believes that Pedro and his gang may be responsible for Virginia's murder, using the old templar legend as a way to keep people out of their territory.

Professor Cantal protests that his son is not a killer, though he has not seen him in two years. Sadly, he lays his head down on a desk. The inspector then tells Betty and Roger that the morgue attendant is dead and Virginia's body is missing. He tells Betty to be careful, for her shop is near the morgue. The police will be watching, he says, but still she should be "very careful."
