Tombs of the Blind Dead Review
Chapter 4: Berzano
Once we leave the unfortunate Virginia to her fate, we leave the monastery and find ourselves in Spain, where Roger and Betty are at an outdoor table, at a hotel. It is breakfast time, and though Roger does not eat, he does ask for and pay the bill. He tells Betty that he has called Lisbon and Virginia is not there. Betty replies, "You think she's lost?"
Pointing at a map, Roger asks a maid if there is "anything near here." The maid replies in the negative, to which Roger says, "But we saw something from the train." She responds, "You mean Berzano? It's been deserted for over 100 years." Betty inquires, "Maybe our friend spent the night?" Shocked and with a look of horror, the maid drops the platter she has been holding. It becomes clear that she knows something about Berzano, but refuses to speak because of hotel policy. The stories about Berzano "scare tourists away" and she doesn't want to lose her job.
After the maid departs, the hotel manager comes over to the table and asks (amusingly and amazingly; just like a jerk looking for an excuse to fire someone) if everything is okay and whether Roger has a complaint. Roger assures him that everything is fine and asks where he might rent a horse. The manager replies, "We have a riding range" to which Roger responds that he doesn't want a range, but rather to "ride out." Betty interjects that she wants a horse as well. Roger protests against her going, saying he'd rather go alone but Betty will have none of it.
Betty and Roger rise and leave the table. As Betty goes ahead, the manager asks, "You're going to Berzano?" Instead of taking the opportunity to learn more, Roger replies, "Yes, and to hell with your superstitions."
The scene changes again to the locomotive, where the engineers see Virginia's body lying in a field, supposedly adjacent to Berzano (this is the well mowed field mentioned earlier). Again, the younger of the two wants to stop and understates the matter saying, "It's the girl. She needs help." His father again forbids it, saying "Let's get out of here, the police will deal with it." The camera goes in for close up of Virginia, whose body is riddled with bite marks.
Later, Roger and Betty come riding into Berzano. They soon find the medieval cemetery, but as they dismount their horses bolt and dart away, prompting some worry from Betty. Roger says he'll stop the train so they can get a ride. Betty wonders what scared the horses. Roger says he doesn't know. Perhaps it was a snake.
The conversation changes to the cemetery and the unusual crosses (ankhs) that decorate some of the graves. Roger declares them to be Egyptian and points out that they were formerly used for "black arts." Betty says they ought to go since the place is "too creepy." Roger reminds her that they must look for Virginia.
After calling for Virginia with no success, the two begin to explore the inside of the monastery. Almost immediately, the find Virginia's property and sleeping bag. Roger also finds the shoe Virginia lost as she fled up the stairs.
At this point they hear a noise and two policeman - Officer Marcos and Inspector Oliviera appear. They ask the two why they are there. They reply that they are looking for a friend who spent the night there. The policeman asks if the friend was Virginia White. In short order, Roger and Betty learn that Virginia "has been murdered" and that they are needed to identify the body. Betty blames herself, and Roger attempts to comfort her.
