Tombs of the Blind Dead Review

Chapter 2: Your Ticket Please

The scene changes to show a charming old locomotive, taking on a supply of water. Here we are briefly introduced to the engineer and his son who we'll see several times throughout the movie. Right now, the engineer seems to be instructing his son in the family business. After a brief exchange about keeping the boiler filled up, he tells the younger man that he wants him to collect the (passenger') tickets, and to "start shoveling." The old train is indeed an old train - he means to start shoveling coal, which provides power. Tombs of the Blind Dead
Meanwhile, just outside the train, Virginia and Roger are waiting on the station platform for a very late Betty. Virginia observes, "She's late. She won't be coming." Roger wants to wait a little longer, while Virginia wants to get on the train and find their seats. Just then Betty arrives and announces that her friend didn't come so she won't be going either. Roger presses the matter and insists that she come anyway. Virginia is clearly displeased, but all three board the train and occupy the same compartment.

On the train, Roger and Betty engage in small talk and it becomes even more clear that he is interested in her. When Betty attempts to retrieve her makeup case from overhead storage, she accidentally falls back into Roger's lap. He laughs, "Very friendly on a first date" to which Betty replies, "I can't wait for the second one." At this, Virginia has had enough and excuses herself saying, "I need some fresh air."

Back in the other car, Betty declares her belief that Virginia is "upset." Roger replies that he doesn't see why, since he and Virginia have nothing between them. He then admits that he likes Betty and "that's the way it goes." Betty disagrees saying, "Virginia is my best friend." She goes to talk to Virginia while Roger stays behind.

Tombs of the Blind Dead
Betty joins Virginia out on the railing of a train compartment and here an odd flashback shows some history between the two women. It seems that Betty is a closet homosexual who seduced Virginia back in the day, and this seems to be one of the sources of Virginia's discomfort. Virginia is clearly uncomfortable around the other woman, and doubly irritated over Roger's interest in her.

After the flashback, Roger returns to find Betty and Virginia sharing a close hug. The look on his face indicate that he might suspect that something is going on, but he says nothing. At this point, Virginia once again breaks away to reenter the train. The younger engineer asks for her ticket, at which point she offers him money if he will stop the train so she can "get off." He declares that this is impossible because it's against the rules and "there's nothing here." Further conversation makes it clear that there is no village around for miles.

Tombs of the Blind Dead
After the departure of the younger engineer, Virginia looks out the window to see a far away structure on a hill. This turns out to be Berzano - the former home base of the dreaded Templars. Quickly, Virginia gathers her gear (remember, she has come prepared for a camping trip) and leaps off the train.

Virginia's departure is witnessed by both Roger and Betty, who call out after her. Both call on her to "come back" (as if she could chase down a train). Roger, ever the gentleman, calls out to ask Virginia if she is "loco." Finally, he rings the train's alarm.

The younger engineer, about to engage the train brake, is stopped by his father. The older man knows about the region and is not taking any chances. He declares that "We can't stop here."

At this point they both see Virginia in the distance and the older man says cryptically, "She doesn't know what she's in for." "What do you mean?" asks the other man. "Nothing, just shovel more coal."

The train speeds away, leaving Virginia on her own.
