Chapter 10: I'm Not Afraid

Roger and Betty set out via boat to visit Pedro Cantal. When they draw near to the smuggler base the helmsman declares that he will not go any farther because it's dangerous. Roger leaves Betty behind and tells the two to call the police if he's not back in thirty minutes.

On shore, Roger encounters some seedly looking characters and two women. One woman lies and tells him that Pedro isn't there, but the other one interjects and orders the first woman to go get Pedro She interrupts Cantal in bed with one Maria (actress Maria Silva). Maria doesn't want Pedro to leave, but he says he must as it "might be the police" and "the heat's on." The two argue back and forth in a little exchange.

After establishing the fact that Roger is not the police, Pedro asks him what he wants. Roger begins to tell him about Berzano and Virginia's murder, but Pedro declares that he is not interested, at least until Roger explains that the police think his gang is involved. In short order, Pedro agrees to accompany Roger to Berzano where they will spend the night. Roger wants to find out what happened to Virginia. Pedro wants to find out what's going on so as to prove that he and his group are not involved. Maria also decides to come along.

At Berzano we find ourselves in a room where Pedro asks Roger if he is armed. Roger says he is and produces a small pistol. Pedro tells him to give the small weapon to the ladies and hands Roger a larger pistol. When asked what he himself will do for a weapon Pedro produces a switchblade knife and declares that he knows how to use it.

Pedro then decides to walk around Berzano, refusing Roger's offer to do with him. He asks Betty if she would like to go, but Maria interjects that Betty is "not his type." This infuriates Betty, who immediately decides to go with Pedro. The two leave. Back in the room, Maria apparently tries to get under Roger's skin, telling him that Pedro is going to "take his girl." Roger doesn't take the bait and replies that Betty isn't his girl. Maria then offers Roger a drink of rum and offers herself to him, but Roger isn't interested. Soon they decide to go for a walk themselves.

Outside, Pedro finds out that Betty and Roger aren't a couple. His advance are rebuffed by Betty, and in a violent scene he rapes her, afterwards offering her a cigarette as if all is well.

As Roger and Maria are walking, Roger finds the second shoe that Virginia lost during her flight from the undead knights. In another part of Berzano, Betty and Pedro have reclothed when the strange toll of a bell is heard. Betty flees back to where she thinks the others will be, while Pedro produces his knife and announces himself unafraid. He watches in horror as tombs begin to open and finds himself quickly surrounded by knights. Roger arrives just in time to see Pedro perish, with knights lapping his blood. Watch close and you'll see shiny rubbery skeletal hands.

Roger fires several shots into gang of zombies, but the only effect his bullets have it to make them realize that he is there. They turn toward him and he flees back to the room.

Back at the room, Roger announces from the outside that the templars have killed Pedro. He wants in, but fearful and suspicious Maria refuses to let Betty open the door and pulls a gun on her, saying she will kill her if she does. A catfight breaks out and Betty eventually gets the upper hand, but too late for Roger. The templars chop off his arm, and when Betty opens the door she finds a dying Roger and a hoard of zombies. Roger, you proto-David Hasselhoff, if you had went camping with Virginia and kept your eyes off the other woman, you'd have a fine woman right now and not be zombie meat - but you didn't listen.
