The Headless Stagecoach Driver
Waylaid By Highwaymen!
Near Antlers, Oklahoma, so the story goes, is an old stage coach line. A long time ago, a coach that traveled the route was ambushed by highwaymen. I never heard a particular reason given as to why the coach was robbed. Perhaps it carried a payroll in gold or silver. Perhaps it carried very little and the robbers were desperate - which is probably closer to the truth, since neither Antlers nor any other place in Southeast Oklahoma is a gold-laden metropolis. Whatever the case may have been, the coach was "held up."
During the course of the robbery, the coach driver was killed. It seems he was murdered for refusing to stop at the command of the robbers. In fact, he apparently attempted to flee, and so to stop him the bandits beheaded him. I assume he was attacked with a sword, though no particular weapon is ever named.
According to the story, even as the driver's head fell to the ground, he reigned in the horses and said to them, "whoa." This concludes the story, except for one more thing: if you go to that spot at a certain time, you'll see an old stagecoach pass by. If you look close enough, you'll see the driver is headless.¹
¹As is typical in these stories, only the bare details are given and exact locations are omitted. This type of ghost story is the stuff of folklore. Often the "time" during which one must be present to "see the ghost" is during the full moon. -Txtrek
