Spiro Mounds Archaeological Park - Pictures Of The General Area
The Arkansas River is just a short distance from the park. Although I drove, it is actually within walking distance. As I recall, when I got behind the site near the river, there were places where I could see the park through the trees; most of these large complexes were (naturally) built near water sources. Curiously, I saw either a hawk or a falcon - definitely a bird of prey though I can't tell one from the other up close, let alone while driving - perched in a tree when I left the river. I was reminded that these kind of birds appear repeatedly in Mississippian Culture artwork.
A Distant Hill About Four Miles From The Park

Nothing amazing, but seems oddly out of place when you're there.
Mountain Range

Two views of the Winding Stair Mountain Range, a scenic drive about 45 minutes away from Spiro.
