The Spiro People

Spiro

"The leaders at Spiro Mounds were a part of the trading and religious society that archaeologists call the Mississippian Culture. Their importance was shown by large numbers of artifacts made of material acquired throughout the eastern United States. These artifacts were found with the leaders bodies in the Craig Mound. The big burials had hundreds of thousands of artifacts buried with them, more than at any other site in the United States.

Around A.D. 1450, the Spiro Mounds site and many other cities were abandoned. The people had stopped using their leaders, changed their ways of life, and eventually became parts of the Wichita and Caddo tribes."
