2006 Return Visit to the Arnold E.A. Roitsch Archaeological Site and Area

Roitsch Site

"In this vicinity archeologists have located a large village and ceremonial center occupied between A.D. 1000 and A.D. 1700 by ancestors of the Caddo Indians. Sedentary farmers, the Caddos built villages and farms on alluvial terraces of the Red River. Evidence from the site has revealed a number of scattered farmsteads and two earthen mounds which served as religious or ceremonial centers. The site also has yielded Caddo ceramics, plus glass beads, and metal weapons and tools, indicating the tribes in this area traded with European explorers."

Trail Notes:

  1. Location: Historical marker in Red River County, Texas, FM 195.
  2. Weather: 54 degrees, sunny with light chilly wind.
  3. Arrived at 4:15 PM

Notes:
This marker is very hard to miss. It's a very quiet almost remote place, however one man did stop to see if I was having car trouble.

Looking Northeast of the Marker

The marker is surrounded by the highway and pasture land. The trees in the distance are the only thing that stand out. The Red River, which cannot be seen here, is immediately behind the left hand grove.

The dots in the distance are round bales of hay. I don't know why they were on the ground in December.
