Fossils - Updated: 11/1/07

I'm not a big fossil hunter, at least it's not a major hobby for me like it is for some people, but occasionally I'll stumble across something that gets my attention. Sometimes it's almost like fossils will "call to you" out of the dirt. A silly idea, perhaps, but anyone who has found one will probably know what I mean. If you want to hunt fossils with less trouble, try watching for areas newly graveled with white rock, and then have at it. Something's bound to be found! Another good place to look, at least in my experience, is in the rocks that line railroad tracks. You'd be surprised at the finds available there from fossils to antique bottles. Here are a few pictures of things I've found without trying over the past four years.

This is one of the largest fossils I've ever found. It measures 5 and 3/4" at its longest point. I found it on the bottom of a white rock creek that was going through a dry spell.

These dudes turn up everywhere in various stages of perfection; I grab them all.

These likewise make an appearance everywhere in various stages of perfection; I grab them all. These fossils are the "hemiaster," dated by those who claim to know as late Cretaceous to "recent."
