Fort Towson Oklahoma Photos
The Fort Towson historic site is the remains of an early military fort with a history that can and has filled books. For an overview of Fort Towson, see this entry in the OHS's The Chronicles Of Oklahoma. Fort Towson is a nice place to visit with friendly staff. I visited in June of 2009.

Sutler's Store
Trail Notes:
- Location: Historic military fort in Choctaw County, Oklahoma. Travelling on Highway 70, look for the Fort Towson historic site sign and then turn north. The fort lies about a mile down on the left side of the road. A large sign will be seen off to the left; it's hard to miss.
- Weather: 95 degrees, sunny.
- Arrived at 11:15 A.M.
- Two visitors; myself and a companion.
- Date of visit: June 25, 2009.

Pavilion At Fort Towson Historic Site
Notes:
Admission is free; donations are accepted. The ruins feature the remains of the old fort, a visitors center, and the fort cemetery. The Doaksville site is about two miles away from Fort Towson. Staff is available to answer questions about the displays and will show you the reconstructed sutler's store which is filled with antiques and reproductions which may have been available in frontier days. In the northern room, those plants hanging from the ceiling are tobacco (I know, I asked).

Enough Said
Safety Note:
While a road runs through and around the historic site, be aware that a better visit will be had if you get out and walk. The Oklahoma summer is intense, so be careful and be sure to drink water.
