God's Word Is Still True
Reading: Genesis 2:16-17
16 And the LORD God commanded the man [Adam], saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
In verse 16, God is speaking to Adam about what he could and could not eat in the Garden of Eden. The time is early during the creation. The occasion was when Adam was placed into the Garden of Eden.
In verse 16, God gave Adam His permission to eat from every tree in the Garden of Eden. I don't know how much fruit or how many nuts were in the garden, but I'm quite sure that Adam had a buffet whenever he got hungry. The only thing God specifically commanded Adam not to eat was the fruit of one particular tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Put some context with this command and you'll understand why this command was given. Adam was a child of God, just a few days old. The first thing you do when you raise a child is teach him to obey. You do that by setting rules about right and wrong behavior. You set a standard and you expect it to be followed. That's what God was doing - He set up a standard of right and wrong and explained it to Adam. He then let Adam choose whether or not he would obey, just like we do with our children. All we can do is tell them what's right and wrong, and they choose whether or not they follow our standard.
There is always a consequence for violating any standard of conduct. In verse 17, God explained what would happen to Adam if he chose to ignore the rules. God said, "In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."
What God said here has been the subject of confusion. It does not simply mean that Adam would die immediately. Neither does it mean that Adam would begin to grow old and die one day. Actually the Hebrew language makes it carry both ideas. The literal translation of "Thou shalt surely die" is "dying, thou shalt continue to die." As I understand the Hebrew, it's called an absolute infinitive. That was exactly what happened when Adam chose to disobey His Father's word. He died immediately, and he went on dying physically. His immediate death was not physical, but spiritual - the wages of sin is death. He found out that God's word is true.
Two weeks ago I was reading the news on the internet and I came across an Associated Press article entitled, "Anti-aging supplements don't work."
The author wrote: "The fountain of youth apparently does not yet come in a pill. Widely used DHEA supplements and testosterone patches failed to deliver their touted anti-aging benefits in one of the first rigorous studies to test such claims in older men and women.
The substances did not improve the participants' strength, their physical performance, or certain other measures of health.
The lead Dr. in the study spoke to the New England Journal of Medicine and said, "I don't think there's any case for administering these to elderly people."
No kidding.
People try to prove God wrong, but it doesn't work. Man has never been able to cure old age and never will be able to because God's word is true. Dying you shall continue to die. There is no way to stop aging any more than you can stop having a sin nature.
People still act like Adam and choose to ignore God's word. It doesn't do any good, because our Father's word is true.
We're not going to discover a way to live forever, so forget about it but don't be discouraged because God has His own formula for old age.
That same word that's always true gives the sure cure for aging. There is an anti-aging formula. The Bible says you can have it in the form of a glorified body that does not grow old.
The same Bible says there is a way to bring the dead back to life and there is a way to live forever, but it's not found in pills or medicines.
It is found in repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as personal Savior.
The truth of God's word is never a bad thing, even if it denies us the ability to make a pill and live forever or to run around doing whatever we want to do with no consequence. The truth of God's word makes it certain that He will do everything He promises to do.
We can rejoice that God's word is still true.
