About Me & This Webpage
Welcome to the ruins...
Welcome to the new Ruined Metropolis home page. After years of bad experiences with a very popular free website host (including once losing the entire site!), the ruins have finally moved to their own domain. The site title was inspired by my interest in Austen Henry Layard's archeological excavations of ancient Nineveh, the Cthulhu Mythos, and various other faux-arcane interests which may or may not be represented herein. Take a look around and, as always, thanks for visiting my pages.
The metropolis "network" or Ye gateway to ye ruined web includes Exploring Historic Texas (Texas T & T), the Ruined Metropolis blog, and growing content throughout this new site. My original purpose here was to share my pictures, interests, and hobbies "beyond official work." I had wished for one of them there deep, insightful, or even theological pages like some of my friends have, but this one doesn't make the grade. This part of the site is, ultimately, nothing more than a personal home page (lighthearted, hopefully) that I made for fun. Since the original incarnation, these pages have also become an experiment in which I am "testing" the waters with reference to ad revenue and affiliate sales. If I find such to be profitable, then good. If not, it doesn't really matter. But I thought it would be interesting to see what could be done in that area.
beyond "official" work
Most of my time is devoted to the study of Scripture, trying to follow God's will, and ministering to others. However, when I have vacations and spare time, I have some interests that are uniquely my own.
My main interests outside of work include urbex (urban exploration), visits and road trips to historic places, antique bottle collecting (mainly antique bottle digging and hunting), knife collecting, amateur photography, treasure hunting/metal detecting, and cloud chasing. I also like RPG's when I have time (check out abandonia.com,) and it looks like my prophecy about being a power tool freak is coming to pass.
Yea, verily I am a jack-of-no-trades and master of nothing, not that you actually care. :-)

Even More About Me
I'm a full time dad, husband, pastor, student, and a recent seminary graduate. I recently completed a fifth year of studies to round out required credits. I've been thinking about returning to secular college to study English, psychology, or history - I haven't decided on a major. I've also developed a vocational interest or two that I might pursue. I have many interests and hobbies and like most people I'm busy enough to have an agenda and a full appointment book.
My Interests & Hobbies
"Do it yourself stuff;" theology; preaching; writing and reading (history; science fiction; Lovecraftian genre); antiques; knife collecting; metal detecting; vehicle cusomization; early b/w horror movies (critique); Texas history; taking pictures of nature and the weather (but not serious photography). I'm also a bona fide Ebayer and it looks like I'm shaping up to be a power tool freak. I love storm spotting & taking pictures of storms. I spend quite a bit of time involved in study and theological writing. My favorite days are days when it rains or snows.
As I read the above, it occurs to me that I must be a big nerd. I don't even care.
My Favorite Movies
All the Star Trek movies; Predator series; early silent to 1940's horror films; Alien Series; some of the "B" attempts to make movies from Lovecraft's stories are okay, too (if only for their amusement). In general I like horror movies and Sci-Fi movies.
My Favorite Actors/Actresses
I like Amanda Tapping's work on Stargate. Likewise I like Claudia Black's work on Stargate and Farscape. I also like Patrick Stewart - I like Captain Picard more than Captain Kirk, Captain Janeway more than Picard or Kirk, and Captain Archer best of all. Stewart was also excellent in Moby Dick, and is actually quite impressive in every movie in which he appears (X-Men, etc). I've now seen that Aaron Douglas is an excellent actor; and in fact I'm impressed with the entire cast of Battlestar Galactica. Ben Browder has made my person list of amazing actors, and of course we cannot forget the master of sarcastic replies on Stargate, Richard Dean Anderson.
My Favorite TV Shows
1. Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi
2. Stargate SG-1 - I loathe the fact that it has been cancelled.
3. Star Trek (TNG)
4. Farscape
5. Stargate Atlantis
6. The Deadliest Catch - but where did it go?
7. Star Trek Voyager
8. Star Trek Enterprise
9. Survivorman
Sci Fi's new series Painkiller Jane seems like it may have merit [Note: It doesn't], and I'm also impressed with the Dresden Files. I really don't like the orginal Star Trek series or the movies it spawned. Go figure. Recently I've been watching Dr. Who and SciFi's new attempt at Flash Gordon. Dr. Who is better than Flash, which does not seem to measure up to what I remember about the old Flash comics and movies.
My Favorite Music
I can't seem to get myself pinned down to any particular style of music.
1. I like Merle, Waylon, and Willie, so I must like country. Hey, I still like the Dixie Chicks - I don't have to agree with their politics to like their music. I saw Charlie Pride in concert in 2006 - awesome performance. On the other hand, I prefer "Shotgun Willie" over "Boxcar Willie."
2. I like the Stones, Metallica, and ZZ Top, so I must like rock.
3. Of course I like Christian music and especially hymns. I often get Gospel music CDs in the mail and I enjoy all of them. I really enjoy the Statler Bros.' Gospel music.
4. I can hardly believe it, but I've started to appreciate and enjoy early American music of all sorts.
I like some of everything from Mozart (classical) to Sawyer Brown (country) all the way to Bal-Sagoth (metal). So there you have it.
My Favorite Books
1. The Bible; the ones listed hereafter are in no particular order.
2. The works of H.P. Lovecraft.
3. Conan the Barbarian series
4. Of course I still love the writings of Austen Layard.
For the most part, I like non-fiction, history oriented books.
My Favorite Author
No contest, it's H.P. Lovecraft. Check out his writings and other information concerning his life/works at The H.P. Lovecraft Archive.
Favorite Quotes
-"Real men love Jesus."
-"'Second place' is just a polite way of saying, 'loser.'"
-"Regret is just a memory written on my brow and there's nothing I can do about it now." - Willie Nelson
-"Resistance is futile." - The Borg Collective
